Typical make-up mistakes - and how you can avoid them!
Every beginning is difficult. Everyone makes mistakes when dealing with something new, and it’s the same with makeup.
Of course, not everyone makes the same or all mistakes, but these 7 are very common – especially for makeup beginners.
But fortunately, you can always learn, so here we show you the most common mistakes and how to avoid them.
NOTE: Even though we’re talking about makeup mistakes here, everything is of course subjective. If you make one of these “mistakes” but think it looks good on you and you feel comfortable with it, then that’s perfectly fine. We don’t set rules – everything we discuss here is just tips and suggestions.
1. Overpainting eyebrows
Many women find it hard to find the right method for eyebrow makeup – especially since trends change very often. However, if you don’t follow trends but just want a natural-looking eyebrow, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Don’t apply makeup outside the natural lines. That means don’t draw them further forward or backward.
- Don’t create unnatural edges and corners – it’s simple: just follow the natural path of your eyebrow.
- Don’t draw firm lines; instead, make many small gentle strokes to fill in your eyebrow.
- Make sure you use the right color. If the eyebrow pencil is too light or too dark, it will look unnatural.
Use, for example, the Eyebrow Pencil Chocolate 121. It’s a subtle brown tone that looks beautifully natural, whether you have blonde, brown, or gray hair.
2. Too much concealer reduces the effect
Using the right amount of concealer is actually much easier than many women think. It’s important to keep in mind that concealer is not a full foundation but only meant to cover small imperfections.
- Don’t apply the concealer over a large area. Instead, just make a few small dots that you can then blend with your finger or a brush. Remember: you can always add more later; for now, it’s just about brightening the dark spots.
- Buy a shade that matches your skin tone. If the concealer is too dark or too light for your skin color, it naturally won’t work properly. This is especially important for solid concealers.
Use, for example, the Liquid Concealer 919 or the solid Concealer 920. Concealer 920 is especially ideal for very fair skin types.
3. Applying Lipstick Inaccurately
A lot can go wrong with Lipstick – often with the application technique, but sometimes it starts with the color. Even though Lipstick can be very effective, it is all the more unfortunate when something goes wrong.
- Make sure not to apply the Lipstick too far inside, otherwise it can stain your teeth.
- Do not color outside the lips. If you find it difficult to follow the natural shape of your lips, simply try outlining the edges with a matching Lipliner first. Then you only have to fill in the inner area.
- When it comes to color, you probably just have to experiment a bit. It's best to slowly approach red lips with casual colors.

4. Dark Eyeliner up to the Front Corner of the Eye
Of course, many people intentionally apply makeup this way. However, you should be aware that it makes the eye look significantly smaller. To avoid this, draw the dark line only up to about the middle or ¾ of the eyelid (to the center of the pupil) and then highlight the corner of the eye with a light Eyeliner or highlighter.
Use, for example, the dark Eyeliner Aubergine 129 and the light Eyeliner Champagner 114. This instantly makes your eyes look bigger and brighter.
5. Eyeliner on the Waterline
You get the best effect when you apply the Eyeliner directly on the lash line. If the Eyeliner is applied on the waterline, it works briefly but can smudge quickly. If applied too low, it looks unnatural.
The same rule applies here as with eyeliners: only extend the dark eyeliner about to the middle of the eye, then trace the rest with a light eyeliner.
6. Applying rouge in the wrong place
Rouge is a great way to make the face look younger and fresher, but it really only has the desired effect if used correctly. Otherwise, it can quickly look clownish. Since not everyone used rouge in their youth, there are still many women who do not apply it correctly even as they age.
- Apply only moderately. Too much color looks unnatural and painted on.
- Do not apply too low. If rouge is applied too low, it also looks wrong. The best way to find the right spot is to make a fish face and then apply it to the cheekbones with a large, soft brush. The same principle applies as with concealers – less is more!
- The color is just as important for rouge. Choose a color that matches your skin. For a natural look, you should also avoid shimmer particles.

Liebes Cosline-Team,
ich bin jetzt 56 und habe zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben Spaß am Schminken und traue mich immer öfter auch an weniger dezente Farben wie Lila . Trotzdem habe ich mit Cosline nie das Gefühl “angemalt” zu sein. Dank Eurer Videos und Tipps geht es wirklich leicht, etwas Farbe und Frische ins Gesicht zu zaubern. Nur den Wing muss ich noch ein bisschen üben… 😉… aber ich bin ja noch jung, das kann ja noch werden … 😀.
Schade ist nur, dass manche Stifte so schnell brechen. Und deshalb bräuchte ich dringend Nachschub in “Champagner”. Könnt Ihr mir sagen wann der Kajalstift wieder verfügbar sein wird?

Ich finde es immer gut, gelegentlich über Schminkfehler zu lesen oder zu gucken. Man kann sich dann korrigieren, wenn sich ein Fehler in die Schminkroutine eingeschlichen hat.
